ذخیره سازی نفت سرقت شده از خطوط انتقال نفت در نیجریه و پالایش یا فروش آن در خارج از کشور، به درآمد اصلی عده ای از مردم نیجریه تبدیل شده است.

ژنرال جانسون اُچوگا که به عنوان فرمانده یک کمپین نظامی علیه قاچاق سوخت تحت فرماندهی رییس جمهور گودلوک جاناتان انجام وظیفه می کند، در این باره به رویترز گفت: در سال 2012 نزدیک به 2000 مظنون دراین باره دستگیر شدند و 4000 سایت پالایش غیرقانونی و 30000 بشکه مشتقات نفتی و هزاران قایق نفتکش نابود شد.
